Make a Zap: Survey Monkey & Charley
Charley’s integration with Zapier means you can send responses from Survey Monkey right into Charley! Surveys should, of course, include an email address – this is what allows us to tie the responses to your visitors.
What can you do with the additional information in Charley? With Smart List Builder, you can create lists based on the questions answered. This allows you to tailor email campaigns based on information like how someone responded to a question.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves on that – first, you’ll want to make your Zap so that every response triggers an action into Charley. Let’s get started.
If you haven’t connected Charley to your Zapier account yet, you can see how to do it here.
Watch a video or read on below for the step-by-step.
Step 1: Make a Zap
After logging into your Zapier account, click the orange Make a Zap button at the top of your Dashboad screen.
This will take you to the first step of creating a Zap – choosing your Trigger.
Step 2: Configuring the Trigger
The trigger in a Zap is what sets off the automated task. For this Zap, our trigger will be a response to a form from Survey Monkey. Knowing this, we’ll choose Survey Monkey from the Choose an App step.
If you don’t see it immediately as an icon in the apps section, use the search bar for ‘Survey Monkey’ and you should be able to select it.
You’ll then choose what kind of event you’d like Zapier to create a trigger for. Easy for you, there’s only one option!
- New Survey Response: Triggers when you add a new response.
Next, you’ll connect your Survey Monkey account to Zapier. If it’s already connected, you’ll see an option for the Survey Monkey account you wish to use. The one you choose should be the account that contains the survey you you’ll be triggering from.
The next step has a couple drop downs. We are only worried about the first option which chooses which Survey you’d like to draw information from. Use the drop down to find the survey name.
The last step for the Trigger is just testing the connection to your Survey Monkey account. You’ll want to make sure that your survey has at least one response with the information you wish to collect. Zapier will open a connection to your Survey Monkey account and make sure to give you the green light.
Next, we decide what to do with the event you set up in the Trigger section by configuring the Action.
Step 3: Configuring the Action
The Action step is where we tell Zapier what to do with our Triggered event. In this case, we’re saying: for every new response to my Survey Monkey form, add them as a subscriber to a particular mailing list in Charley. So let’s set up the Charley action.
Again, you’ll choose which app you’re using – and here, you can see the Charley app. If you’ve searched your apps and don’t see Charley, make sure you’ve gone through the set up here.
Next, we’ll choose a Charley action. We want to add subscribers to a particular list here, so we’ll choose the last option for Subscribe Email.
You’ll go on to choose an account. If you’ve already added your account, you’ll see it listed here. If not, make sure to follow the instructions in the linked article above to set up your Charley account with Zapier.
The next step contains several options – two of which are required:
- List ID: choose from a drop down of list names to find the Mailing List you wish to add subscribers to Required
- Email: this will open a drop down of the column names from the spreadsheet you’ve chosen in the Trigger step. Choose the column that contains the email addresses Required
- First Name Optional
- Last Name Optional
- Custom Fields: Use these fields if you wish for Charley to collect the responses on your surveys in addition to the email addresses. Responses will be saved to a subscriber’s record and can be used to sort out in different list using SmartList Builder. Optional
Once you’ve selected the proper list and fields, you can run the test through Zapier. It’ll check Survey Monkey and see if the responses are there for what you’ve selected, then it’ll “zap” that information into Charley. If all goes well, you’ll get a green light that the Zap is ready to roll!
